Challenges facing the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Department
A growing gang problem
It is only necessary to look a short distance to the north and south of San Luis Obispo County to see the problems
that gangs cause. I will work with law enforcement, social services, probation, courts, churches, schools, service
organizations and the private sector to offer alternatives to gang membership. To show my commitment
toward this problem I will donate 20% of my salary as Sheriff to gang diversion programs.
Budget
I will do everything possible to
increase the flow of money into Sheriff's Operations and will reduce the amount of money flowing out of the Department
through claims, settlements and verdicts against the county. I will do this by assuring that all employees are fully
and adequately trained to do each encountered task, incident or event correctly and safely.
Disaster Planning
Recent events have shown
that the Government cannot provide for everyone during a disaster. I will "decentralize" emergency planning
to the "neighborhood" level so that every family will be adequately trained and equipped to survive the initial
event and be self sufficient until the aftermath is abated.
